Who We Are?

Creating In Color is a meeting place for BIPOC who work in music in the theatre. That includes all musical positions: musical directors, arrangers, pit and session musicians, audio engineers, composers, lyricists, copyists, rehearsal pianists, programmers, etc. Anyone who is a person of color who is involved in the creation of music for the theatre is welcome here. Connected to this website is a Facebook discussion group, also named Creating In Color. Here you will find a growing directory of music makers of color to expand your networking and hiring capabilities. We are here to encourage a deeper connection among all of us and we are here to collectively hold the theatre responsible for doing better by all of its artists of color. In the past we have not been allowed access to tell our own stories on stage and we want to be part of changing that paradigm and creating greater opportunity for all of us behind the table and in the rooms where decisions are made. Music teams on Broadway, regionally, educationally and around the world remain overwhelmingly white and here is where we begin to make the world of the people who create and maintain the musical lifeblood of our work more closely resemble the world outside of the theatre’s doors.
